Domain Name Tips and Tricks

Domain Name TipsChoosing the right Domain Name for your business can be a little trickier than it appears; even though the process of acquiring a domain is simple, there are certain factors you should consider before making the purchase.

If you have an existing brick and mortar business you should register your business name, then register a shorter, more memorable, version for online customers.

On the flip side, if you’re starting from scratch, then research your market and try to find a suitable name that already receives a fair amount of traffic.

O.k. — before making your selection — here are a few tricks and tips for making your domain SEO-Friendly and competitor proof.

  • Avoid building your primary business with free domains.  Many hosting companies provide free domains with each hosting account to entice the buyer.  However, your web host could hold you hostage if you decide to move your website.  For best results — purchase your domain with a separate company.
  • Use no more than 2 to 3 hyphens in your domain to refrain from looking suspicious to the search engine spiders.
  • Always register your domain with and without hyphens.  Also, register the .com, .net, .org, and .info to prevent “typo squatters” from capitalizing on your efforts.
  • If possible register your domain with plurals and misspellings.  This may cost a few unaccounted dollars, but could be very profitable in the long run.
  • Try to keep your name short and memorable; even if you have to register a short version of your business and redirect it to the main site.
  • A great way to improve search engine ranking is to include keywords in your domain name.  Some marketers say this doesn’t matter, but It Does!

This may seem a little over the top and you may feel these steps aren’t necessary, however the strategies listed will prevent “typo squatters” from ruining your business name and legally stealing your profits.

So… be sure to put the proper time and research in choosing the right domain name for your business.

Trouble Picking Your First Domain Name

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Are you having trouble picking your first domain name?  Domain name selection isn’t rocket science, however you better not slip on this one.

You see… it’s very easy to purchase your first domain name based on an emotional or personal connection, instead of proper market research.

Don’t kick yourself if this sounds familiar, because this is one of the cheapest mistakes you can make online.

When most people decide to start an internet business, buying a domain name is the last thing on their check list; and it usually becomes an impulse buy with very little thought on how it affects their business.

If you’ve carefully planned your entire business, then don’t get impatient at the very end.

Domain names play a major role in your online business; but most people don’t know this in the beginning, and usually purchase 3 or 4 domains before getting one that fits their business.

Helpful Hint: I normally pick my domain name or names while I’m researching the market — based on what people are searching for.

Now take a moment and think about this, your domain name is the only thing you really own that can’t be stolen or duplicated.

It’s your own piece of online real estate, like a home or parcel of land that’s located in cyberspace, that can be bought, traded, or sold in the future for a profit.

Now… are you starting to understand the importance of domain name selection.

As you grow online, you’ll find buying and selling domains to be a big business, with prices ranging from $10 to well into the $10,000s and higher.

So, if you’re having trouble picking your first domain name; here’s what I suggest.

Make your name your first choice.

You see… many people overlook their own name, because it has no real significance when you first come online.

And their right!

Very few people will enter your name into the search engines in the beginning; but as you grow online and your business grows, people will begin to inquire about you, your company, and your product or service.

So… if you’re not sure what to do — you can’t go wrong buying your own name, and it’s an excellent source of branding yourself online.

Furthermore, most people’s name cost around $10 per year, and that’s a small price to pay for something that has the potential to be worth thousands in the future.

So, if you’re having trouble picking your first domain name, go ahead and grab your name before someone else purchases it, then sells it to you for a profit.
